CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Following a recent health inspection, a restaurant in Champaign County was issued a yellow notice due to over 10 violations.

Mala Parlor

Mala Parlor, situated at 112 E Green St. in Champaign, underwent inspection on June 4. The inspector identified 14 violations related to risk factors and interventions, along with two that were repeated offenses.

Since the inspection revealed 10 or more violations in “priority” or “priority foundation” categories, a yellow notice was placed at the premises. Priority items are crucial in preventing foodborne illnesses or injuries, while priority foundation items are essential in supporting these priority items.

Some of these violations included:

  • An uncovered container of raw duck intestines was stored on a rack above green onions in the walk-in cooler (for the second inspection in a row)
  • Foods including tomato sauce, tomatoes and lettuce were found above the required 41ºF
  • A soiled knife was on the magnetic knife rack with the clean knives. A soiled pan was found with clean pans on the shelf above the 3-compartment sink
  • Several foods including a container of rice sauce with cooked rice, bamboo shoots and an opened bag of sausages were not labeled with their opening dates
  • A hand sink in one of the restrooms was not provided with hand soap

The inspector also found that multiple pieces of unapproved equipment were present at Mala Parlor. An unapproved refrigerated sauce station was installed in the dining room. According to the report, it was not considered a sanitation listed unit. Wooden bowls with “noticeable cracks” were found on the wire rack near the cookline and used for serving food.

Additionally, the inspector found two large stock pots that were too large for the dish machine or 3-compartment sink, and a shaved ice machine that was not considered sanitation listed. All of the unapproved items were condemned and are required to be removed by June 18.

You can find a full list of the violations on the inspection report.

All of the violations will need to be corrected, and a follow-up inspection will be done in about 10 business days. If any violations are found in the same priority or priority foundation categories during the follow-up, the food service will be closed, and a red placard will be posted.
