Screven Co. shooting suspect at large after deadly incident in Statesboro

STATESBORO, Ga. (WSAV) — The Statesboro Police Department is reaching out to the public for help in locating a suspect involved in a shooting incident in Screven County.

Officers were dispatched to 200 Lanier Drive early on Saturday morning, around 1:00 a.m., to respond to reports of gunfire.

Upon arrival, they found 30-year-old Deontre Mincey, who had tragically succumbed to a gunshot wound.

Another adult male was also caught in the incident, sustaining an arm injury that was not life-threatening. He was promptly transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Following the shooting, police reviewed surveillance footage which showed several witnesses near the scene. In a statement released on Sunday, authorities described the investigation as “complicated” due to the absence of witnesses when officers arrived.

On Sunday, officials revealed that detectives have identified Khalir Nickens, 21, from Sylvania, as a suspect in the case.

Police have issued warrants for his arrest on charges of felony murder, as well as several other associated felonies.

Nickens should be considered armed and dangerous, officials said.
