CASABLANCA – Morocco’s Authenticity and Modernity Party secured more seats than any other political group in the parliamentary election, according to provisional results released by the Interior Ministry early Thursday.
The governing National Assembly of Independents, meanwhile, suffered significant losses, while the moderate Islamist Justice and Development Party staged a notable comeback.
The Authenticity and Modernity Party won 97 of the 395 seats in Morocco’s lower house, the House of Representatives. It was followed by the National Assembly of Independents with 66 seats and the Istiqlal Party with 65. The Justice and Development Party, which captured only 13 seats in the 2021 election, rebounded sharply to win 54.
Authenticity and Modernity and Istiqlal were both part of the parliamentary majority that supported the outgoing government led by the National Assembly of Independents. Established in 2008 by a figure close to the palace, Authenticity and Modernity grew into a powerful political force and was widely viewed as a counterbalance to the Justice and Development Party, which had governed Morocco for a decade.
