House panel releases new Epstein documents

The House Oversight Committee has unveiled new documents related to the criminal activities of the late Jeffrey Epstein. Among these released files is a transcript from a prior interview with Alex Acosta, who served as Labor Secretary under President Trump during his first term.

Acosta, who was the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, found himself under intense scrutiny and eventually resigned in 2019. His resignation came after widespread criticism of the 2008 plea deal he brokered for Epstein. This agreement permitted Epstein to serve a mere 13 months in prison for two state prostitution charges. Despite this lenient sentence, numerous victims—some as young as 14—came forward, accusing Epstein of orchestrating an international sex trafficking operation.

In his September testimony before the House Oversight Committee, Acosta defended his past decision not to pursue more severe charges against Epstein. He argued that jailing a billionaire like Epstein was a significant action, sending a clear message that such behavior was unacceptable.
