NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. – In a decisive move, the New Smyrna Beach City Commission has unanimously rejected a proposed ordinance that would have permitted the operation of “peddle pubs,” officially termed commercial mega-cycles, on local roads.

The proposal was introduced following a request from local entrepreneur Christopher Smith, who aimed to launch a venture named “Rolling Cheers.” During the commission meeting, Smith presented himself as a small business owner lacking corporate support and argued that his business would not cause disturbances.

Despite Smith’s assurances, city staff advised against approving the ordinance, expressing concerns related to noise, safety, and potential traffic disruptions in the bustling beachside community.

Addressing the noise issue, Smith countered by explaining that the cycles would be fitted with small stereo systems set to “respectful volumes,” claiming they would be quieter than golf carts, boats, and outdoor dining areas.

Nonetheless, several residents voiced their opposition, worrying about the type of crowd the attraction might draw to the area and the possibility of an influx of similar businesses if the ordinance were to pass.

After considering these factors, the commission unanimously decided to decline the ordinance, effectively banning peddle pubs from the city’s streets at this time.
