URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — Two men were arrested this month in Urbana after police said they were caught with firearms despite being felons.

One of the arrests, initially made on July 3, was not disclosed to the public until Monday. The incident took place during a traffic stop at Hunter Street and Lierman Avenue involving a “suspicious vehicle.” According to the Urbana Police Department, officers discovered open alcohol inside the vehicle, along with a firearm positioned under the driver’s seat.

Authorities identified the driver as a 26-year-old male from Urbana, who was previously convicted of a felony. He was subsequently detained for aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and possession of a firearm by a felon. Additionally, he faced arrest due to two outstanding warrants and received citations for having an open alcohol container in the vehicle and operating a vehicle with a suspended license.

The second arrest occurred at around 1:21 a.m. on Monday, July 21. It followed reports to the authorities of a man brandishing a gun on Hill Street. Upon arrival, Urbana officers, alongside Champaign County Sheriff’s deputies, located and apprehended a suspect. A firearm was discovered partially concealed beneath the individual.

The suspect, a 45-year-old Urbana man who is also a convicted felon, was formally placed under arrest and was booked into jail. Urbana Police officials did not specify the charges he is facing.

Officials did not identify either person arrested by name.
