Child hurt by alligator while playing in North Carolina lake, police say

LAKE WACCAMAW, N.C. (WBTW) — A child sustained significant injuries from an alligator on Friday evening while engaging in play with a group of other kids at Lake Waccamaw in Columbus County, as reported by authorities on Facebook.

The Lake Waccamaw Police Department confirmed that the injuries were indeed caused by an alligator, though it remains uncertain if the child was bitten or clawed. The injuries were serious; however, they were not life-threatening.

While the children were playing in approximately 4 feet of water, police reported that one of them suddenly cried out, “something bit me.” Once all the children exited the water, a 6 to 7-foot-long alligator appeared in the vicinity where they had been playing.

The alligator was neutralized, police said.

“[The] NC Wildlife Resources Commission is on point with this situation and are doing an excellent job,” police said in the post. “We remind our residents and visitors to remain ever vigilant and aware of their surroundings. In this particular case, the gator was never seen till after the incident occurred, and multiple adults were present. Please respect the water and understand these animals are not tame or pets. If you see one, maintain a safe distance at all times. And exit the water if you are in it.”
