DeLAND, Fla. – Police officers from DeLand and deputies from Volusia County are on the hunt for a suspect involved in an early Saturday morning shooting outside a bar. This incident occurred at the same location where a fatal shooting took place earlier in the month, as reported by the police.

According to a news release from the DeLand Police Department, Calvin Roosevelt Gilbert, 55, is suspected of opening fire on another man outside McCabe’s Bar located on North Amelia Avenue. This incident reportedly stemmed from an argument over a drink.

Gilbert — who’s currently at large and believed to be driving a tan 1999 Nissan Quest — had never met the victim before that night, police said.

The confrontation began when Gilbert allegedly bought the victim a $5 drink. He then confronted the victim outside the bar, demanding a refund. This altercation escalated, leading Gilbert to allegedly pull out a handgun and shoot at the victim from approximately three feet away.

The victim ducked out of the way and was not struck by the bullet, the release states, adding the bullet wound up hitting an exterior cooler and penetrating the wall of the building, which was still occupied at the time.

Officers and deputies responded around 2:05 a.m., locating a single 9mm shell casing and observing physical damage to the scene consistent with a shooting, according to the release. Gilbert had run away before entering the van and leaving the scene northbound on North Amelia Avenue, police said.

The victim and bar staff helped identify Gilbert with a photo lineup, the release states. News 6 is working to learn more.

Anyone with information about Gilbert’s whereabouts is urged to not approach him and to instead contact the DeLand Police Department or submit an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers.

It was at McCabe’s bar where on May 3, 24-year-old Avantae Williams was accused of fatally shooting 32-year-old Keshod Harris.

News 6 Reporter Jarell Baker interviewed Courtney Rickman, a bartender at McCabe’s who was shot in both hands during the incident and told us she was trying to break up a fight when it happened.

“It was the most terrifying thing I’ve ever been through. It happened so fast that I didn’t really have time to get scared when it happened, but, it keeps coming back. It replays in your mind over and over,” Rickman said.

Williams, a former high school football star, was arrested on May 5 to face charges including second-degree murder with a firearm in Harris’ death.
