In a surprising turn of events, renowned hip-hop star Akon found himself in legal trouble last week in the outskirts of Atlanta. The artist, whose real name is Aliaune Thiam, was taken into custody after failing to appear in court over a charge related to driving with a suspended license.
According to police records, the arrest took place on Friday in Chamblee, a suburb northeast of Atlanta. Akon was initially detained by local authorities and subsequently transferred to the DeKalb County jail. From there, he was handed over to the Roswell police, where he was processed into another detention facility. Fortunately for Akon, he managed to post bail and secure his release on the same day.
Akon, an influential figure in the music industry, first rose to prominence with his 2004 debut album. With hits like “Smack That,” “I Wanna Love You,” and “Locked Up,” the Grammy-nominated artist has made a significant mark on the R&B scene. Beyond his musical achievements, Akon has been actively involved in philanthropic efforts across Africa, drawing on his experiences growing up in Senegal.
Efforts to reach Akon’s representatives for comments on the matter have so far been unsuccessful.
Further details from the Roswell police reveal that Akon, who resides in a gated community in Alpharetta, was encountered on September 10 in a disabled Tesla Cybertruck stranded on a bustling road. While awaiting a tow truck, a police officer discovered through a license plate check that Akon lacked valid auto insurance and had a suspended license, stemming from a missed court appearance in January 2023.
As the situation unfolded, the police impounded the Cybertruck, citing Akon for driving without a valid license and confiscating the license he had with him. Additionally, an “illegal vape” was reportedly found and seized during the incident.
Chamblee police told local news outlets they responded to a business called Tint World on Friday when a traffic camera alerted them that the Cybertruck was present and was connected to an outstanding warrant.
Akon is currently on tour in India. He performed in Delhi on Sunday, two days after his arrest.
