SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA, Va. (WJHL) — The region mourns the loss of one of its legendary high school coaches, Phil Robbins. Known for his successful tenures at John Battle, Christiansburg, and Powell Valley, Robbins passed away on Sunday at the age of 81.

Robbins’ coaching journey started in 1971 with John Battle High School. He later moved to Christiansburg, where under his leadership, the Blue Demons achieved their first playoff berth in 1981.

In 1983, Robbins took the helm at Powell Valley High School, marking nearly 30 years of remarkable leadership. There, he amassed a record of 268–81 and won seven state football championships between 1985 and 1998. His teams also secured two state track and field titles during his distinguished career.

Several of his former players went on to compete at the college and professional levels, including NFL running backs Thomas and Julius Jones.

Even after retiring, Robbins continued to contribute to the community by aiding the football program at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise. In 2024, his legacy was commemorated when Bullitt Park in Big Stone Gap named its field in his honor.

Robbins is survived by his wife, Patty, and their three children.
