Savannah PD adds Clydesdale to Mounted Patrol

The Savannah Police Department (SPD) in Georgia has recently welcomed a new addition to their team—a Clydesdale horse for their Mounted Patrol, according to a social media announcement made on Thursday.

In a post on X, SPD shared that Otto, a 7-year-old horse, became part of the unit following eight months of intensive training in advanced patrolling techniques at Mounted Patrol International in Austin, Texas.

Mounted Patrol dates all the way back to 1796 in Savannah but was reestablished in 1989 and has been used since.

This addition provides SPD with several benefits, including the ability to patrol areas that are inaccessible to vehicles and offering officers an elevated perspective to better monitor crowds.

The unit currently consists of six riders and eight horses, and they live, sleep and train in stables off Dean Forest Road.
