ORLANDO, Fla. – An Orlando man previously accused by police of killing a swan at Lake Eola last year is in custody again, this time after investigators say he went on a daytime vandalism spree with a metal pipe Monday.
Adonis Leyva, 34, is facing felony criminal mischief charges tied to the incident, which unfolded along the heavily traveled East Colonial Drive corridor.
According to investigators, Leyva used the pipe to shatter a window at an Arby’s, frightening a female employee inside, before moving on and striking a nearby Dunkin’ Donuts sign.
Police also accuse him of walking in the roadway and throwing the pipe toward vehicles during the disturbance.
Responding officers found Leyva a short time later at the Wawa across the street, where the Arby’s employee identified him, an arrest affidavit states.
“I’m glad everybody’s alright,” said Kim Long, who was getting gas at the Wawa. “I hope he gets the help that he needs.”
The damage allegations widened Tuesday morning, when an employee at a nearby PNC Bank branch discovered the ATM had been smashed.
Investigators said surveillance video appeared to place Leyva at the bank on Monday as well. He now faces an additional felony charge connected to the property damage at PNC Bank.
News 6 reviewed court records, which show Leyva was arrested nearly a year ago at Lake Eola in a separate, high-profile case involving the killing of a swan.
People at the lake on Tuesday said they have questions about Leyva’s violent, erratic behavior in public places.
“Nobody would feel safe,” Elizabeth Guerrero said. “I don’t think anybody that does cruelty or has harming in their hearts should be free.”
Records also show Leyva went through a mental competency evaluation in that case, and a judge found him fit to stand trial.
Court records indicate he later pleaded no contest and was released less than a month ago after spending 344 days in jail.
News 6 contacted State Attorney Monique Worrell’s office asking whether Leyva received mental health treatment as part of the earlier case and whether he was on probation.
The State Attorney’s Office has not yet answered those questions.
A sign posted at the Arby’s referenced in the police report indicates the restaurant is “no longer open.”
