Major traffic shift scheduled for I-95/I-16 interchange

SAVANNAH, Ga. () — A major traffic shift is scheduled to start this week for northbound traffic on I-95 at the I-16 interchange.

Starting Wednesday — weather permitting — the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) will redirect I-95 northbound traffic by opening the new collector-distributor lane, also referred to as a connecting lane, at the I-16/I-95 Interchange.

Connecting lanes run alongside the primary travel lanes of an interstate or highway, providing links to access roads or entrance ramps to enhance the flow of merging traffic.

The project will commence Wednesday at 10 p.m. and proceed until Thursday morning at 5 a.m. Georgia DOT will close ramps to facilitate the traffic shift, transitioning I-95 northbound traffic to its final setup.

Drivers on I-95 north will have to make exiting decisions sooner. The new connecting lane system is separated from interstate by a barrier allowing more distance to safely enter and exit at the I-16/I-95 Interchange.

Drivers should expect delays and intermittent lane closures along this stretch of highway.
