SCDMV announces new, more secure drivers license

The DMV in South Carolina is introducing a redesigned version of driver’s licenses and state IDs, featuring advanced security enhancements.

The new IDs will begin the issuance process in August in two Midlands DMV locations, and will become statewide in the fall.

“We are always challenged with staying a step ahead of the bad guys,” said Lauren Phillips, the Director of Driver Services with the SCDMV.

Phillips added that security is one of the driving forces of these new IDs, but design and structure played a big role too.

“These new cards boast increased tamper and counterfeit resistance due to their enhanced materials. We’re thrilled to present a more secure document to the state’s residents,” she mentioned.

She highlighted that the refreshed designs feature new security measures to combat fraud and forgery. Alongside a sleeker design, the cards incorporate elements that make unauthorized duplication more challenging.

Outside the Shop Road DMV in Columbia, Paul Huff and Lekisha Davis were on their way to obtain new licenses, choosing to return in late August to acquire the updated versions.

“I’m going to get a new one because if it’ll help me with my security any at all, it’s a benefit,” Huff said.

Davis added, “I think it’s a good thing that the DMV is making South Carolina safer.”

Phillips said the new license isn’t required, but it is recommended for those needing real IDs as they are real ID compliant.

“What’s notable is that the introduction of Real IDs was hardly disruptive for South Carolina. It highlights several factors, including the fact that South Carolina began issuing Real IDs in 2018, and most residents already possess one.”

The cost for obtaining the new licenses will remain unchanged, and the DMV has coordinated with law enforcement to ensure they are informed about these updates.
