SC Rep. charged with child sex crimes resigns

COLUMBIA, S.C. () — South Carolina Representative Robert John “RJ” May has stepped down from his position in the state’s House of Representatives, as stated in his resignation letter to the Speaker of the House dated August 7.

The letter was received by the South Carolina Statehouse Monday. obtained a copy of the letter.

May was arrested and indicted in June on counts of distributing child sex abuse material.

In his letter, he wrote, “Dear Mr. Speaker, I have concluded that resigning immediately from the South Carolina House of Representatives serves the best interest of my family and constituents. Kindly accept this letter as my official resignation. Serving the people of District 88 has been an honor.”

May represented House District 88 in Lexington County since 2021.
