StormTeam 3: Intense weekend heat with very little heat relief

Hi there! Storm Team 3 Meteorologist Alysa Carsley here – let’s have a fabulous Friday!

Friday promises to be scorching, with temperatures soaring to the mid-90s. The heat index is expected to reach around 105° by this afternoon. There might be a few isolated showers scattered throughout the area today. As the high-pressure system shifts westward toward the East Coast, it will bring some moisture inland. This will result in a few storms developing along the sea breeze during the afternoon and evening hours.

During the weekend, high pressure will remain dominant across the region. This will lead to drier conditions but also increase temperatures. Expect highs in the upper 90s, with some areas possibly hitting triple digits, even before factoring in the heat index. The combination of heat and humidity will make conditions hazardous, with the ‘feels like’ temperatures surpassing 110° at times, lasting at least until Monday.

The intense heat can be very exhausting. The heat index indicates how hot it feels to the body, and elevated humidity makes it harder to cool down. It’s essential to stay hydrated and take frequent breaks. Minimize time outdoors, and enjoy the comfort of air conditioning or at least seek shade. The safest time to be outside is in the morning, when it’s still muggy but less perilous compared to the severe heat of the afternoon.

By the middle of next week, expect rain chances to increase. This will help the intense heat to back of,f with high temperatures returning to near average in the lower 90s.
