Tragic Turn in Decatur: 17-Year-Old's Death Sparks Ongoing Homicide Investigation

DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — A tragic shooting on Friday night claimed the life of a 17-year-old, while a 19-year-old has been apprehended amid an ongoing homicide probe by the Decatur Police.

Authorities were alerted on October 24 at 10:10 p.m. about gunshots and a victim at a business located in the 1100 block of E Wood Street. Upon their arrival, officers discovered a teenage boy suffering from at least one gunshot wound. He was swiftly transported to Decatur Memorial Hospital, where he unfortunately passed away from his injuries.

In a swift response, patrol officers tracked down a vehicle suspected to have been involved in the shooting. A 19-year-old man was taken into custody at the location where the vehicle was found.

The Criminal Investigations Division promptly arrived on the scene to gather evidence, review surveillance footage, and speak with witnesses. Throughout the night, detectives conducted search warrants at two different homes in Decatur.

Following the investigation, Nehemiah T. Meyers, age 19, from Decatur, was arrested on charges of first-degree murder and is now held in the Macon County Jail.

Although an arrest has been made, this continues to be an active investigation, and detectives continue to follow up on investigative leads.
