2 killed, 1 child missing after Fremont train crash

FREMONT, Ohio (WJW) – Two people were killed and at least one child is missing after multiple pedestrians were struck by a train Sunday evening in Fremont, authorities said. Emergency crews are now at the scene.

Mayor Danny Sanchez told FOX 8 News crews at the scene that a family was in town from Fort Wayne, Indiana, on a fishing trip at the Sandusky River.

The two people who died were a 58-year-old woman and a 38-year-old woman, believed to be mother and daughter, Sanchez said.

Crews are currently searching the river for a 5-year-old child. A child who is about 14 months old was taken to a hospital in Toledo, Sanchez said. Authorities are unsure of that child’s condition at this time.

According to the Fremont Police Department, the crash happened near the Miles Newton Bridge in Fremont, which goes over the Sandusky River at Hayes Avenue.

The Fremont, Ohio Police Department posted to Facebook Sunday evening around 8:25 p.m., saying, “Emergency crews are working on a pedestrian vs. train accident near the Miles Newton Bridge.  Stay clear, State Street is open, Miles Newton bridge is closed.”

The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office did confirm to FOX 8 News that their dive team was requested to assist in the incident at around 8:30 p.m.
