Transforming Landscapes: How Champaign's 'Field of Flags' is Redefining Community Service

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — As Veteran’s Day approaches, students at a high school in Champaign County took the opportunity to pay tribute to veterans with a special event on Sunday.

The archery team at Centennial High School organized their “Field of Flags” event, a community service initiative that began last year, according to Heather Miller, an assistant coach.

Veterans, archers, their families, and other community members gathered to witness a poignant ceremony. Active military personnel presented the colors, followed by participants placing flags on the school’s front lawn, a gesture of respect and remembrance.

Miller highlighted the significance of the event, noting that several former archery team members have served in the military. This initiative serves as a meaningful way for current students to honor veterans, especially as the nation approaches a milestone anniversary.

“It’s crucial for students to grasp the sacrifices made over the years, allowing us to celebrate the upcoming 250th anniversary,” Miller stated. “We aimed to involve them in learning and commemorating this history.”

She said that they were also honoring future veterans. One member of the archery team has already enlisted to serve in the United States military after high school.
