On Tuesday, President Trump commented on the recently announced engagement of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce, adopting a more positive tone towards the famous singer, whom he has criticized in the past.
The engagement news came out during a lengthy Cabinet meeting held by Trump, after which a journalist inquired about his thoughts.
Trump responded, “Well, I wish them a lot of luck. I think he’s a fantastic player, a great guy, and I believe she’s a wonderful person. So I wish them a lot of luck.”
Earlier that day, Swift revealed the engagement to her 280 million Instagram followers, posting photos of herself and Kelce in an enchanting garden, showcasing what looked like an engagement ring.
Trump has had harsher words for Swift in the past.
Despite the pleasant congratulatory remarks, Trump has frequently criticized Swift on Truth Social, previously expressing his disdain by stating he “hates” her and claiming she is “no longer HOT” in May. In February, he even falsely alleged that Swift was “booed out of the stadium” during the Super Bowl where Kelce’s team, the Kansas City Chiefs, lost to the Philadelphia Eagles.
Trump had attended the Super Bowl, confidently backing the Chiefs to win, while also commending quarterback Patrick Mahomes and his wife, Brittany, mentioning at the time that “she’s a Trump fan.”
Last summer, he called Swift “very beautiful” and questioned whether the entertainer was “legitimately liberal” or if it was “just an act.”
Swift has been critical of Trump, saying in 2019 that he was “gaslighting the American public.” She endorsed former Vice President Kamala Harris’s 2024 White House bid.
