When you take to the skies, there are certain protocols you must adhere to. For example, your carry-on should comply with airline standards, liquids must be in containers not exceeding 3.4 ounces to pass security, and checking in is required before the flight’s departure. Now, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has introduced additional regulations to this list.

Specifically, the TSA has prohibited three more items from being carried on flights. Here’s a hint: these changes might affect your travel beauty regimen.

If you use cordless hair styling devices like curling or flat irons, this update is particularly relevant. These tools typically use butane or gas cartridges for power, which are now forbidden in checked baggage. The Federal Aviation Administration has revised their rules to ban such items from checked luggage.

  • Curling irons or flatirons that contains gas cartridges
  • Curling irons or flat irons fueled by butane
  • Spare gas cartridges for curling irons or flat irons

The silver lining is that these devices can still be included in carry-on baggage, provided they have a safety cover to prevent accidental activation inside your bag.

We’ve gathered a selection of hair styling tools that are completely travel-friendly. This includes options with cords that can be packed in checked luggage, as well as cordless varieties that operate on batteries and are suitable for your carry-on.

This particular corded flat iron features ceramic plates designed to leave hair sleek and smooth, as claimed by the manufacturer. It heats up within 30 seconds to its maximum setting of 425 degrees Fahrenheit, with a user-friendly LED display.

Another corded hair tool, this curling iron has a 1.25-inch diameter to give you loose curls. The barrel has a nano titanium exterior to reduce frizz and a cool tip to help prevent you from burning your fingertips, according to the brand.

Willing to splurge? Dyson’s straightener is cordless and has a rechargeable battery instead of a gas cartridge or butane. Even still, it comes with a case you can put it in for travel. The tool has intelligent heat control, so it adjusts automatically based on your hair thickness and texture, according to the brand. It also has an automatic shut-off after ten minutes of inactivity.

This battery-operated curling iron has a rotating wand so you don’t have to turn it with your wrist. It also has a temperature control system that constantly checks the temperature to prevent it from overheating and scorching your hair, according to the brand. To use, take one-inch sections of hair, clip them inside the barrel and then push a button to twist the barrel and wrap your hair around it. Then, push the same button to release your strands.
