BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – Two people were killed early Saturday when the SUV they were taking across the Merritt Island Causeway crashed and caught fire as they were trapped inside, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash happened around 2:34 a.m. at the causeway’s intersection with Kiwanis Island Park Road, troopers said.

According to an FHP crash report, a 2011 Toyota RAV4 was traveling westbound on Merritt Island Causeway, approaching the intersection, when its driver lost control of the vehicle.

The Toyota ran off the roadway to the right and struck a traffic control light pole, causing the SUV to become engulfed in flames, the report states.

The vehicle was carrying two occupants — the driver and a passenger — whose identities are pending word from the medical examiner’s office, troopers said.

FHP is still investigating.
