Two Tropical Systems Likely to Develop as Tropics Heat Up

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Atlantic is beginning to draw more attention as hurricane season moves into a traditionally more active stretch, with forecasters keeping tabs on multiple areas of disturbed weather across the basin.

Tropical Outlook 8/12/26

At this point, none of the systems pose a direct threat to Florida, but one developing disturbance is standing out because of its projected path toward the Caribbean.

Invest 92L

Invest 92L is the feature forecasters will be watching most closely in the days ahead. The tropical disturbance is now located over the central tropical Atlantic and is expected to approach or enter the Caribbean by the weekend.

Environmental conditions appear favorable enough for development, and a tropical depression could form soon. Still, the system is not without challenges. As it tracks westward, dry air and wind shear may interfere with its organization and could cap its potential strength.

Because the disturbance remains several days from the Caribbean, there is still considerable uncertainty surrounding its future. Its eventual intensity and track will largely depend on how well it can consolidate while crossing the Atlantic. For now, Florida is not facing a tropical threat from Invest 92L.

Forecasters are also monitoring a separate low-pressure area over the central subtropical Atlantic, located roughly 1,050 miles east-northeast of Bermuda. That system has shown signs of improved organization and is already generating winds at tropical-storm strength.

It may briefly earn tropical storm status as it races toward the east-northeast. However, this feature is expected to stay over open water, making it a classic “fish storm” with no land impacts anticipated.

New Tropical Wave

Farther east, another tropical wave has recently emerged off the western coast of Africa. It is currently producing scattered, poorly organized showers and thunderstorms, but gradual development is possible as it moves west across the Atlantic.

Development chances remain relatively low, with a 30% chance of formation over the next seven days.

The next two names on the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season list are Cristobal and Dolly.
