GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Gunshots were reported at the University of Florida campus on Monday, sparking an alert from the university.

In a release just before 9:30 p.m., university officials announced that the gunshots had been reported at the Smathers Library.

“Avoid the area or secure in place if nearby,” the release reads. “Details to follows.”

Shortly thereafter, university officials issued another release, stating that there was no criminal activity or any injuries identified.

Instead, officials announced that police confirmed there were no gunshots fired at the library.

“The incident is consistent with hoax calls,” officials wrote. “Normal operations may resume.”

UF Alert-Gainesville: Authorities confirmed that there were no gunshots at Smathers Library. The situation aligns with prank calls. You may return to normal activities.
