COLUMBIA, S.C. ()- UPDATE 8:10 p.m.: The University of South Carolina has given the all clear and students no longer need to shelter in place.
“There is currently no emergency,” the Carolina Alert website indicates. “Thomas Cooper Library remains closed until further notice. Public safety officials are present on the scene.”
The university mentioned in a Facebook post that there is no evidence of a shooting, though two minor injuries were reported in connection with the building’s evacuation.

UPDATE 7:13 p.m.- The University of South Carolina’s campus security states there is no evidence of an active shooter at present. Police continue to search the affected buildings and request that everyone maintains their shelter in place until an all-clear is given.

The University of South Carolina’s Columbia campus is reporting an active shooter at Thomas Cooper Library.
The suspect is described as a white male in black pants, approximately 6 feet tall, and still in the vicinity. Everyone is advised to steer clear of the area and either evacuate or find a secure location to barricade themselves as needed until further instructions are provided.
Campus police suggests that people should defend themselves if they encounter the suspect and obey public safety officials’ commands.
