DELTONA, Fla. – In a chilling turn of events early Wednesday morning, a Deltona neighborhood experienced a jarring wake-up call as deputies from the Volusia Sheriff’s Office launched a search for suspects involved in a failed home invasion that escalated to gunfire.

The unsettling incident unfolded shortly after 4 a.m. on Wainwright Street, where a doorbell camera captured footage of four individuals attempting to break into a residence. When their efforts to gain entry were thwarted, the suspects resorted to firing shots at the house before speeding away from the scene. Fortunately, despite the barrage, no injuries were reported.

The community was left shaken by the early morning violence. Neighbors recounted the terrifying moments when they were suddenly awakened by the sound of gunshots piercing the quiet. “It was like bang-bang-bang, like that,” one resident vividly described, the noise still fresh in her mind as she spoke of the fear that gripped her upon hearing the shots around 4:07 a.m.

Concern for loved ones immediately took hold as families processed the alarming situation. The sheriff’s office continues to investigate the incident, seeking any information that might lead to the apprehension of the suspects involved in this brazen crime.

“It was like bang-bang-bang, like that,” one neighbor said, recalling the noise that jolted her awake.

She said that she heard shots around 4:07 a.m. and immediately worried about her family.

Deputies say the suspects’ vehicle was later spotted on I-4, leading to a pursuit. Authorities say deputies eventually lost sight of the vehicle.

Cresinda Jones, who moved into her home down the street last month, said she watched in fear as crime scene tape and patrol cars surrounded the area.

“I’m thankful that no one was harmed. I have a 19-month-old here, and stray bullets don’t know anyone,” she said. “That’s very dangerous. It could happen to me.”

Detectives have not said how many shots were fired or whether the house was specifically targeted.

The investigation is ongoing.
