URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — New changes at one hospital in Urbana could impact people who need extra help reaching their appointments.

Starting next month, Carle Foundation Hospital will be revising their parking services by discontinuing valet parking. There is some concern among those with disabilities about this change. To address these needs, Carle will provide an ADA accessible wheelchair transport service in the north and south parking garages.

However, an Urbana resident, Stevie Bobbitt, expressed doubts about the effectiveness of the new service for her. Bobbitt, who struggles with walking long distances, notes that the parking garages are often busy. She found valet parking to be a convenient option, and with its removal, she now faces a tough choice: whether to continue visiting the hospital or seek alternatives elsewhere.

“I’m unsure how we will manage,” Bobbitt stated. “My husband might have to take time off work for even smaller appointments, and I’m not sure how that will be feasible for us.”

The hospital said there are other changes coming next month. Those include automated parking gates, pay stations, more spots and an ADA accessible shuttle for guests who park in the fairgrounds area.

The changes will start July 1. Carle said the goal is to improve access and the experience for patients and visitors.
