Norovirus outbreak reported among passengers and crew
PORT CANAVERAL, Fla. – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported an outbreak of Norovirus on the Caribbean Princess cruise ship, affecting 102 passengers.
In addition to the passengers, 13 crew members have also fallen ill.
The Caribbean Princess set sail for a 13-day voyage from Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale and is expected to dock at Port Canaveral on Monday, May 11.
Throughout its journey, the cruise liner made scheduled stops in the Bahamas, Puerto Rico, Aruba, St. Maarten, Curacao, and Bonaire.
The most common symptoms among those who have become sick are diarrhea and vomiting.
According to the CDC, Princess Cruises and the crew aboard the ship reported the following actions:
Increased cleaning and disinfection procedures according to their outbreak prevention and response plan
Collected stool specimens from gastrointestinal illness cases for testing
Isolated ill passengers and crew
Consulted with CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program about sanitation cleaning procedures and reporting ill cases
