US Naval Academy on lockdown after threat reports

(NEXSTAR) — The United States Naval Academy, situated in Annapolis, Maryland, is currently under lockdown Thursday evening as authorities address reports regarding threats directed toward the federal service institution.

Thursday evening, Naval Support Activity Annapolis, the academy’s security organization, posted that the lockdown was out of an abundance of caution.

This incident follows a wave of threats against schools nationwide earlier in the day, including several historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). Although the FBI announced Thursday night that they had deemed the threats not credible, some institutions have chosen to maintain campus lockdowns through the weekend out of an abundance of caution.

It remains uncertain if there is any connection between the series of threats and the fatal shooting on Wednesday of far-right influencer Charlie Kirk, but they mark the latest in a series of potential violent occurrences confronting colleges and universities across the nation.

The naval academy is located about 30 miles from Washington, D.C.

This is a developing story.
