VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – Volusia County has issued double-red flags along the coastline, prohibiting all water activities until further notice due to hazardous surf conditions, strong rip currents, and scattered debris caused by recent tidal events, as stated in a news release.
The advisory follows significant damage to the Jetty Connector in Ponce Inlet early Saturday, resulting from yet another bout of “severe tidal activity.”
Officials said the structure has been closed to the public since Hurricane Imelda, when it first suffered tide-related impacts.
County crews will begin debris removal once conditions improve, according to the release.
Additionally, officials urge visitors not to remove or disrupt seaweed that has washed ashore during recent tides, as it plays a crucial role in trapping sand and aiding the natural recovery of beaches and dunes.
Officials said beach driving access will likely remain limited over the next several days until conditions improve.
Beachgoers can stay informed about current conditions and open beach access points by downloading and using the Volusia Beaches app.
Authorities have also observed large amounts of seaweed along the shore in recent days. Beachgoers are advised not to interfere with the seaweed, which is essential for trapping sand and contributing to the natural restoration of beaches and dunes.
Beach driving access is likely to be restricted for several days. Guests are advised to use the Volusia Beaches app for current updates on conditions and open access points.
