Two people died Monday after a small aircraft crashed at an airport in San Diego, authorities said.
The wreck was reported at about 5:21 p.m. at Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport in Kearny Mesa, prompting a response from the San Diego Police Department.
“Approximately 30 SDFD personnel are on scene of a small plane on fire on the runway at the Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport. The airport will be temporarily closed during emergency operations,” San Diego Fire-Rescue said in a post on X.
Police said the cause of the crash and the events leading up to it were not immediately known.
Witnesses working in the area told Fox 5 San Diego they saw the plane burning after the crash.
The fatal San Diego plane crash occurred just two days after a separate aviation disaster in Fresno killed all four people aboard.
In that Saturday crash near Sierra Sky Park Airport, flight instructor Danna Eady, 41, her husband, Craig Eady, 44, and their sons, 10-year-old Pavel and 13-year-old Remus, were killed in a fiery wreck.
Emergency crews, including firefighters, police officers and sheriff’s deputies, found the wreckage of a fixed-wing, single-engine plane on a bluff near the river as flames spread across a nearby hillside.
