StormTeam 3: Coolest Labor Day in 10 years, Summer returns this weekend


SAVANNAH, Ga. – A noticeable shift in the weather is upon us today, ushering in cooler temperatures and a blanket of clouds across the region. Residents can expect temperatures to peak only in the low to mid-70s. Adding to the chill is a breezy northeast wind blowing at speeds of 10 to 15 mph, with occasional gusts reaching up to 25 mph.

A weather system advancing from the west is on our radar, poised to deliver a few isolated showers later this afternoon and into the evening. These scattered showers are likely to persist through the night, setting the stage for what appears to be the rainiest day of the week on Monday. The day will be marked by widespread showers, possibly accompanied by a few claps of thunder, and the continuation of cool, windy conditions. Temperatures will struggle to rise beyond the upper 60s to low 70s, so keeping a raincoat and umbrella at hand would be wise.

As the system gradually drifts southward by Tuesday and Wednesday, the rain will taper off to just a few isolated showers, though the cool and breezy weather will persist. Highs are expected to hover in the mid to upper 60s under predominantly cloudy skies.

Come Thursday, the passage of a cold front will bring another spell of scattered showers and strong winds. Temperatures will remain steady in the mid to upper 60s. Following the front, cooler air will descend just in time for the Halloween weekend. While the sun will make a comeback, temperatures will remain brisk, with daytime highs in the mid to upper 60s and nighttime lows sinking into the lower 40s.

Meanwhile, Hurricane Melissa has intensified and is projected to reach major hurricane status as it advances towards Jamaica. Its trajectory will take it across Cuba and the Bahamas, where it might lose some strength but is expected to remain a hurricane while impacting the Bahamas. Thankfully, the same cold front affecting our area on Thursday will help steer Melissa away from the U.S. mainland, directing it towards Bermuda instead.
