The League Two clash between Walsall and Morecambe has been called off following the heavy rainfall that has swept the nation.

The decision came just an hour and 15 minutes before the crucial fourth-tier match was set to take place at the Bescott Stadium.

Sky Sports footage showed ground staff attempting to get the pitch into condition for a match to be played but, despite their valiant efforts, the game was called off.

Some supporters were left frustrated with the timing of the decision, given that it was just over an hour before kick-off was set to take place.

One supporter wrote: ‘Terrible communication tonight – do better.’

Another said: ‘Tinpot. 1h 15m before the match!!’

‘That’s poor from the club. It’s p***** it down all afternoon,’ one supporter pointed out.

Some fans opted for blunter takes, as one wrote: ‘Embarrassing’ and another posted: ‘Joke of a club’.

Despite the frustrations from supporters, the League Two clash was not the only fixture to get postponed on Tuesday evening.

Elsewhere, in League One, two matches – Burton Albion’s clash with Cheltenham and Bolton’s visit to Cambridge – were also abandoned.

Burton’s game was called off two hours in advance to kick-off, while the match at Cambridge was abandoned mid-way through due to heavy downpour.

Pictures showed groundstaff in Cambridge attempting to clear the water from the pitch before, eventually, the referee called an end to the game.
