Former South Carolina attorney Alex Murdaugh has pleaded guilty to 22 financial fraud-related charges, including money laundering, wire fraud, bank fraud, and conspiracy.

The 55-year-old man is accused of stealing money from his clients and insurance settlements from the family of his late housekeeper.

The 55-year-old man, Murdaugh allegedly collected attorney’s fees on fake annuities, diverted fees to himself instead of his law firm, and accepted insurance proceeds meant for beneficiaries.

The 55-year-old man is also accused of conspiring with a banker to commit wire and bank fraud and defrauding the estate of his late housekeeper.

Each charge carries a maximum sentence of at least 20 years in prison. The 55-year-old man, Murdaugh, still faces 100 other charges, including claims of hiring someone to kill his surviving son, insurance fraud, failure to pay taxes, and involvement in a drug and money laundering ring.

This comes after the 55-year-old man Murdaugh was found guilty in March for the murder of his wife and son.

US District Court Judge Richard Gergel has agreed to and approved the plea deal made between the 55-year-old man and federal prosecutors. The judge will decide on the federal sentencing for Murdaugh at a later time, CNN reported.

US Attorney Adair F. Boroughs stated that Alex Murdaugh’s financial crimes were extensive, bold, and lacking compassion, CNN added.

CNN also reported that the approved plea deal does not mention a specific recommended sentence.
