In September of 2011 in Longmont, Anna Beninati, 18, of Sandy, Utah, was attempting to board the 18mph train with three male friends while studying music therapy at Colorado State University in Fort Collins.

However, the student, who had already hopped on the train almost a dozen times, slid and fell beneath its steel wheels as she attempted to board, and her legs were crushed beneath the 118-car train. Only a few inches of her left leg and half of her right leg remain.

After her father Bill retired from the Air Force and became an ICU doctor at LDS Hospital, the Beninatis relocated from Hawaii to Utah when Anna was 15 years old. Anna struggled to make friends at Alta High, where she was in her ninth year.

She was a bassoonist who was one of six students chosen to perform a concerto in the Virtuoso Showcase at the school. For nearly a year, she battled an eating issue, dropping to 90 pounds on her 5-foot-3 frame.

Despite her burden, she graduated from Alta and enrolled at Colorado State University at the age of 17. She rapidly made friends at CSU and became immersed in college life, but she would only be there for two weeks.
