Hannah Einbinder and Jean Smart were seen throwing themselves into their work routine as they filmed the final season of Hacks this week.

The show stars Jean, 74, as a battle-axe comedy icon reminiscent of Joan Rivers and Hannah, 30, as a young writer who becomes her employee.

Although their starkly different sensibilities lead to explosive clashes between them, they develop a strong if tempestuous friendship.

Both actresses earned Emmys this month for Hacks – and on the red carpet, Hannah let slip that the series will be ending after the upcoming fifth season.

When she won best supporting actress in a comedy series, Hannah, who is Jewish, set off a frenzy by ending her speech with: ‘Go birds, f*** ICE and free Palestine!’

Meanwhile Jean was seen this summer using a cane after a painful fall and a resultant knee surgery – but she was able to walk unassisted at the Emmys, and was seen running across the street in the scene she shot this week.

When they were glimpsed in New York this Wednesday, Jean and Hannah were in character respectively as Deborah Vance and Ava Daniels.

Hannah, the daughter of Saturday Night Live original cast member Laraine Newman, was boho chic in an oversized brown leather jacket over a t-shirt and baggy jeans.

Meanwhile Jean exuded her character’s old-fashioned showbiz flair in a baroque print blazer, an aquamarine top and bright scarlet slacks.

They were accompanied by co-stars including Hacks co-creator Paul W. Downs, who plays Deborah and Ava’s harried mutual manager Jimmy, and Megan Stalter, who plays Jimmy’s ditzy assistant-turned-co-manager Kayla.

Also included in the scene was Mark Indelicato as Deborah’s assistant Damien, rounding off a group of characters seen dashing across a Midtown street.

They were apparently rushing off to a party, as Kayla was laden with designer shopping, Ava was clutching a huge bouquet, Jimmy hauled along a gift basket and Damien carried along an oversized bottle.

While on the Emmys red carpet this month, Hannah revealed that Hacks would start filming again ‘next week,’ then blurted out that ‘knowing it’s the last season is really bittersweet. But I think it’s right, you know?’

She added that ‘it’s nice to do something as many times as it should be done,’ rather than ‘overstay your welcome,’ while speaking to E! News.

Hannah got a round of applause for her Emmys speech but received a polarized social media reaction to its political content, particularly the ‘free Palestine’ line.

As the furor gathered steam online, Hannah told backstage reporters that she felt compelled to criticize Israel because of her own background.

‘I have friends in Gaza who are working as frontline workers, as doctors right now in the north of Gaza to provide care for pregnant women and for schoolchildren to create schools in the refugee camps,’ she said.

‘And It’s an issue that’s very close to my heart for many reasons. I feel like it is my obligation as a Jewish person to distinguish Jews from the State of Israel because our religion and our culture is such an important and longstanding – basically, like – institution that is really separate to this sort of ethno-nationalist state.’

Her remarks were praised on X by the Hamas-affiliated Quds News Network, although they censored her cleavage and bare shoulders in the image they posted of her in her Louis Vuitton Emmys dress.

Hannah is also one of about 3,900 showbiz professionals who recently signed a petition by Film Workers for Palestine demanding a boycott of Israeli movie companies they regard as being ‘complicit in genocide,’ while stopping short of advocating a total cultural boycott of Israel.

Meanwhile Jean was spotted over the summer walking with the help of a cane, after suffering a fall in New York City that required her to have knee surgery.

While celebrating the Fourth of July with her sons, she spun around quickly to hail a cab and tripped over a ‘hockey-puck-sized’ base of a barrier, she told People.

She ‘went down like a ton of bricks’ and was injured seriously enough that she had to pull out of her one-woman Broadway show Call Me Izzy for two weeks.
