Megyn Kelly slams Bill Maher as a 'hypocrite' over pro-Israel speech

Megyn Kelly recently criticized late-night host Bill Maher, labeling him a ‘hypocrite’ following his critique of Democrats for not addressing antisemitism within their ranks. Kelly, 55, took aim at Maher after his latest Real Time episode, where he delivered a pointed monologue ahead of Israel’s 78th anniversary. During his New Rules segment, Maher, 70, sarcastically proposed that failing to wish Israel a ‘happy birthday’ could be deemed antisemitic, highlighting a perceived bias among liberals. He remarked, “Jew hatred isn’t just acceptable now, it’s cool,” and questioned the Democrats’ silence. Maher challenged, “If any other minority group were discussed like this, you’d rally with kente cloth and organize multiple benefit concerts.” He further criticized the left for not calling out misconceptions about Israel, suggesting that spending time in other Middle Eastern countries might offer a stark contrast to Israeli policies.

The Identity Exception

Conservative podcast host Kelly responded to Maher’s comments on X, accusing him of selective outrage. She stated, “He’s such a hypocrite. ‘Anti-woke warrior’ except when it comes to the one identity he shares, and then he’s full BLM 2020.” Although Maher has a Jewish mother and a Catholic educational background, he does not identify as Jewish. In the past, Kelly has supported Israel, especially following the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack, but has since criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s actions in Gaza, as reported by Mediaite. Maher also touched upon the Gaza controversy, asserting, “If you think Israel is the ultimate violator of human rights, you’re either uninformed or ignoring your own hypocrisy, given there are much worse places.” He added, “No Jews, no news,” capturing the current media climate.

A Lecture on Hypocrisy

Maher highlighted global human rights issues, referencing countries like China, Russia, Sudan, Iran, Haiti, and North Korea, which he deemed ‘far worse.’ He emphasized the importance of not conflating antisemitism with criticisms of Israel, Zionism, or Netanyahu. In concluding his remarks, Maher justified his criticism of the Democrats by saying, “Until you address this issue, don’t question my stance.” Kelly’s comments on Maher’s position stirred a reaction, with many pointing out her seemingly altered stance on Israel. One critic remarked, “The pro-Israel side IS the anti-woke side, Megyn. You’re just too blinded by your love of clicks to see that.”

‘I still love you Megyn but this is an erroneous argument – it is anti-woke to defend the Jews bc woke people are generally anti-Semitic right?’ another added. ‘Calling Maher a hypocrite here is pure projection. He has defended Israel and criticized anti-Semitism with the same arguments for decades. His position has not moved an inch. You, on the other hand, have reinvented your commentary on Islam, Israel, and LGBT issues multiple times depending on which network was signing your paycheck,’ a third person wrote. However, some sided with Kelly’s analysis and suggested that US tax payer money should not be sent overseas to Israel. The Daily Mail has reached out to Kelly and Maher for comment.
