During the 2019 federal election, the Hume MP and then-energy minister was caught red-handed congratulating himself on his own social media post about adding 1000 extra carparks in his electorate.

In a memorable Facebook mishap, Angus Taylor once praised himself by posting, “Fantastic. Great move. Well done Angus,” from his own account.

The comment, quickly removed and blamed on a staff error, has since become a legendary moment in Australian political social media blunders.

Social media users and political commentators wasted no time poking fun at the incident, turning it into a running joke within parliamentary circles.

This writer even spotted a mug in Canberra’s press gallery emblazoned with a screenshot of Taylor’s infamous comment.

Although seven years have passed, the blunder might resurface to trouble Taylor as he sets his sights on challenging former opposition leader Sussan Ley in a party room meeting today.

Recent posts by Taylor on Facebook, Instagram, and X have been inundated with the recurring joke, keeping the memory alive.

Hundreds of people are repeating the his 2019 comment, including official accounts from the Young Labor Community Queensland, the NSW Young Labor and UNSW Labor groups.

Taylor and his team haven’t made any move to delete the rush of comments yet.

The former opposition defence spokesperson successfully challenged Ley – just nine months after she took on the top job – leading the vote 34-17 in a brief partyroom meeting today.

Taylor said in a campaign message shared to social media – the subject of the mocking comments – that the Liberal Party has “lost it’s way”.

“I am running to be the leader of the Liberal Party, because I believe Australia is worth fighting for,” Taylor said in the video.
