Australians have shared tales that are both shocking and entertaining, recounting some of the most outrageous antics of their housemates. These stories range from peculiar hygiene practices to astonishing displays of entitlement.

These revelations came to light during a segment on the well-known Australian podcast, Life Uncut, hosted by Laura Byrne and producer Keeshia Pettit. Listeners were encouraged to share their most ‘unhinged’ roommate experiences.

The submissions quickly transformed into a series of domestic horror stories, leaving the hosts incredulous and prompting hundreds of listeners to express that they had faced equally chaotic living situations.

One tale involved a listener who came home to find her housemate had upended all her pot plants onto her bedroom floor, claiming ownership of the pots.

Another listener shared a story about her housemate who took a beloved pair of pants without permission and was caught wearing them in her room.

When confronted, the housemate allegedly suggested that the pants ‘might need washing’ because she wore them without underwear and had developed thrush, causing the hosts to react with disbelief.

‘Maybe that’s why she’s got thrush, because she wore the pants without underwear,’ Keeshia joked.

‘You should have lent her some underwear,’ she continued in hysterics before adding that the housemate should instead have apologised.

Other submissions were equally baffling.

One woman claimed her housemate would routinely steal her clothes before gaslighting her into believing the missing items were actually her own.

She went on to detail that the same housemate ripped pages from the middle of a book she was reading.

And later discovered they had used the torn-out pages to practice reciting part of the text, before allegedly denying she had removed them at all.

Perhaps most shocking was the listener who claimed she woke up to find the same housemate at the end of her bed, watching her while eating a bag of chips.

And when that same housemate eventually moved out, she allegedly took the storyteller’s vibrator with her.

The bizarre confessions prompted the hosts to ask listeners which offence was the worst of the lot, but many argued the stories only became more outrageous in the comments section.

One shared a particularly frustrating tale from the Covid lockdown era, claiming her housemate kept a dog confined to a small bedroom for the entire workday while working from home.

The responses quickly spiralled into a catalogue of household horror stories, prompting disbelief from the hosts and sparking hundreds of comments from listeners who said they had endured similarly chaotic living situations

She said the animal made constant noise and that when she suggested she could take the dog for a walk during her flexible working hours, her housemate insisted she was capable of looking after it herself.

What followed was an incident where the pup accidentally defecated in the hallway of their home, and the dodgy dog-owner blamed her instead of the pooch.

‘When [my housemate] moved out, they unpegged my clothes on the washing line and removed my frozen meals from the Chinese takeaway containers because the pegs and containers were hers,’ a fellow listener wrote.

The departing housemate allegedly left the frozen meals stacked directly in the freezer without any containers at all.

One particularly wild story was about a listener living with a New Zealand couple whose bedroom door was permanently left open despite being positioned directly opposite the bathroom.

One listener revealed her housemate borrowed a favourite pair of pants without permission and was later found wearing them. When confronted, the woman allegedly said they 'might want to wash them' because she'd worn them without underwear and had 'got thrush', causing the hosts to erupt in disbelief

What¿s the worst thing a housemate has ever done to you, and how did you handle it?

She claimed the man spent his days tattooing himself, drinking heavily and attempting to create a homemade hallucinogenic concoction from cactus juice after hearing it could produce mind-altering effects.

‘He ate nothing but fish,’ she joked of his diet.

‘And he started making some kind of cactus juice trying to get high from Bunnings cactus.’

But things took an even stranger turn when the couple moved out and allegedly left their pet scorpion behind.

‘I had to take the bloody thing to the local aquarium.’

Elsewhere, a woman revealed her former housemate had developed an unusual alternative use for cotton buds.

Rather than cleaning his ears, he allegedly used the cotton tips as makeshift tools for removing earwax and would then leave the wax-covered buds scattered across communal countertops.

Many others shared their own experiences of nightmare living arrangements, with tales involving stolen food, unpaid bills, mystery messes and housemates who treated shared homes as if the rules simply did not apply to them.

‘Living with other people really shows you how differently everyone was raised,’ one commenter wrote.

‘Every person who’s ever had a housemate has at least one story that sounds completely made up but is somehow true,’ another added.
