Iran was responsible for at least two antisemitic incidents that took place in Australia last year, according to the federal government, which has responded by expelling Iran’s ambassador.
It is the first time Canberra has declared a foreign ambassador persona non grata since the end of World War II.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced that ASIO identified Iran as being behind the attacks on Lewis’ Continental Kitchen in Sydney on October 20, 2024, and the Adass Israel Synagogue in Melbourne on December 6.
The Department of Foreign Affairs has updated its travel advice for Iran, urging Australians to avoid the country.
The Smarttraveller statement highlighted that foreign nationals in Iran, especially Australians and those with dual Australian-Iranian citizenship, face a significant risk of arbitrary detention or arrest.
“Our ability to provide consular assistance in Iran is extremely limited.”
