NSW Police are currently engaged in a standoff with pro-Palestine supporters regarding a protest set to cross the Sydney Harbour Bridge, which could potentially cause major disruptions in the city.

The Palestine Action Group and NSW Police are in the Supreme Court today debating whether 10,000 demonstrators should be permitted to march on the iconic bridge to draw attention to the humanitarian situation in Gaza this Sunday.

Meanwhile, the pro-Israeli movement known as “Never again is now” has submitted a request for a follow-up protest at the Harbour Tunnel scheduled for Sunday.

The bridge has previously been closed to accommodate events such as reconciliation marches, marathons, World Pride, and for a film shoot involving Hollywood actor Ryan Gosling.

If this protest proceeds, it will mark the first occasion in nearly two years, since the attacks on October 7, that pro-Palestine demonstrators have held their weekly march on the Harbour Bridge.

Thurtell said NSW Police have worked with the Palestine Action Group for more than 100 marches since October 7, 2023.

“We haven’t ever stopped negotiating with these organisers,” he said.

“They know we are an organisation that they can trust and that we will facilitate their marches.

“It just won’t be going over the Sydney Harbour Bridge.”

But organisers insisted this was an “unstoppable” march.

“We hope the police get their act together and get out of the way of the March for Humanity,” Lees said.
