Teachers walked through the city chanting “union, power’ and “that 2.5 per salary cap must go”.

The Independent Education Union (IEU) is calling for a 10 to 15 per cent pay increase and to “cut the paperwork” for teachers.

“Uncompetitive salaries, unsustainable workloads and crippling staff shortages have pushed them beyond their limits,” IEU Secretary Mark Northam said.

The union has threatened further industrial action if the demands are not met.

NSW Education Minister Sarah Mitchell said it’s “disappointing” to see the Catholic school teachers take industrial action today.

“It’s really disappointing when union bosses decide to take industrial action,” she said.

“It really inconveniences families and students who have been through a lot in the past few years.”

It comes after public school teachers walked off the job three weeks ago with the same demands over pay increases and working conditions.

Premier Dominic Perrottet said the budget will address public sector wages, however, that will not impact the wages of independent teachers striking today.

“I would ask all our public servants to not create inconvenience for our parents as we work through these issues,” he said.

“I can’t guarantee everyone will be happy with where we land.”
