A man has been officially charged in connection with the 1991 death of Melinda Freeman in Whittlesea, located just north of Melbourne.

Authorities have apprehended a 63-year-old man from Greensborough, arresting him in his hometown this morning. After conducting an interrogation, police have charged him with murder.

Freeman, aged 27 at the time, was discovered deceased on the evening of October 4, 1991, within her residence on Yea Road in Whittlesea.

Earlier that day, she and her husband participated in a family gathering.

Upon returning home around 4 p.m., the couple shared dinner together.

According to Victoria Police’s cold case summary, Freeman’s husband and child then left the house, so she could spend some time studying for her hoped-for career in the beauty industry.

Later that night, at approximately 11:30 p.m., her husband came back to find the back door unlocked. He observed that the house seemed to have been turned upside down and noticed the front door was ajar.

He walked to the bottom of the stairs and from there, saw Freeman’s body on the top storey landing.

Police believe she had been fatally assaulted.

In February 2022, police announced a $1 million reward for information leading to the conviction of Freeman’s killer.

Police today said they will allege Freeman and the 63-year-old man arrested today were known to each other.
