Tribute to woman hit and killed by police vehicle in Cairns

Boksoon Kwon, a devoted mother and lifelong learner, is fondly remembered for her warmth and wisdom. She was living with her son while pursuing new educational opportunities at TAFE, where she became a beloved figure among her classmates.

At Cairns TAFE, Kwon was enrolled in English and arts courses, where she developed a close friendship with Jiraporn Janluang. Reflecting on their time together, Janluang described Kwon as an exceptionally wise and clever woman.

“She never spoke ill of anyone and was never seen with a grumpy expression,” Janluang shared. “Her warmth was palpable, and she was truly a lovable person.”

Tragically, Kwon’s life was cut short when she was struck and killed by a police Landcruiser in Cairns North yesterday morning. The incident occurred while she was crossing the road with the pedestrian signal in her favor. At the same time, officers were navigating the intersection in pursuit of a wanted individual.

She was crossing the road on a green signal. At the same time officers drove through an intersection to arrest a wanted person.

“I text her phone number and said I heard some news and an accident and someone named Boksoon, then her son replied and said it was her,” Janluang said.

“And I felt like, ‘oh God, this, this … it can’t be’.

“She shouldn’t end up like this.”

Kwon’s son was too distressed to speak on camera today as the police investigation into the officers’ actions continues.
