The federal government has faced escalating criticism over how it has responded to antisemitic attacks in Australia prior to the Bondi Beach terrorist attack.
Special envoy to combat antisemitism Jillian Segal unveiled a 20-page landmark plan in July with dozens of key recommendations to fight the rise of antisemitism.

The government has not yet officially embraced Segal’s recommendations, but Prime Minister Anthony Albanese pledged today to introduce measures aimed at curbing hate speech, radicalization, and antisemitism.

Antisemitism in Australia

Segal’s report has identified the rising tide of antisemitism in Australia as a “national crisis.”

According to the report, incidents of antisemitism surged by 700% during October and November 2023, following the October 7 Hamas attacks, compared to the same period the previous year.

Additionally, Segal noted that between October 2023 and September 2024, the frequency of antisemitic incidents increased by 316%.

Earlier this year, in February, ASIO Director-General Mike Burgess highlighted antisemitism as the foremost threat to life in Australia.
