Why a beer tax break has some claiming the 'system is broken'

A reprieve from the rapidly growing cost of a pint is one step closer to reality but complaints remain that big numbers of Australian drinkers are being left out of the shout.
The House of Representatives yesterday approved a bill temporarily freezing excise on draught beer in a move the government pitched as a cost-of-living measure.

“We recognize the strong desire to ensure all sectors of the brewing and distilling world benefit from excise relief. Nonetheless, the draught beer freeze is a crucial initial measure and should be acknowledged positively,” the statement noted.

Mick Gibb, CEO of the Night Time Industries Association, highlighted that Australia imposes the world’s highest spirits taxes outside Scandinavia, with automatic hikes affecting venues significantly.

“Spirits incur higher taxes compared to beer or wine, with rates increasing every six months,” he remarked in his statement.

“With this recent increase, approximately $32 from the price of a standard 700mL bottle of gin or whisky is direct tax revenue for the government,” he added.

The proposed legislation, set to be enacted in August if approved, will advance to the Senate. Here, independent Tasmanian Senator Tammy Tyrrell will once more advocate for making the freeze permanent.
