An event titled “Why is it right to say Globalise the Intifada” was planned to take place this evening at the East Sydney Community Arts Centre, organized by the group Stop The War on Palestine.
However, Sydney’s lord mayor intervened at the last moment, directing the city’s chief executive to call off the event, citing concerns about potential unrest in the city.
“Protesting the war is a legitimate action and does not diminish my deep sympathy, solidarity, and concern for Jewish communities,” stated Moore.
In Sydney, pro-Palestinian demonstrations have sparked controversy, with several arrests occurring during a protest outside Town Hall in February, coinciding with the visit of Israel’s president, Isaac Herzog.
This incident followed Premier Chris Minns enacting temporary laws to curtail protests following the Bondi shooting, which also expanded police authority during demonstrations.
However, the NSW High Court later declared these laws unconstitutional.
