Tyler Robinson is charged with aggravated murder in Kirk’s September 10 shooting on the Utah Valley University campus in Orem, just a few kilometres north of the Provo courthouse. Prosecutors with the Utah County Attorney’s Office plan to seek the death penalty if Robinson is convicted. Robinson has not yet entered a plea.

An 18-year-old, the child of a deputy county attorney, was present at the campus event where Kirk was shot. The individual’s name has been omitted from court documents, but they communicated with their father, who works in the Utah County Attorney’s Office, to recount the chaotic scenes surrounding the incident, according to legal filings from both prosecutors and defense lawyers.

During recent court hearings, Robinson’s defense team has been advocating for restricted media access in this high-profile case. Judge Graf has enforced a restriction on the publication of photos, videos, and live broadcasts that reveal Robinson’s restraints, aiming to uphold his presumption of innocence before trial.

The judge has yet to decide on a defense proposal to prohibit cameras in the courtroom altogether.

Prosecutors are gearing up to present their case against Robinson during a preliminary hearing set to commence on May 18.
