Peter Dutton has delivered a late appeal to highlight crime as a key election issue, revealing a new $750 million funding initiative just a day before early voting is set to commence.

The opposition leader presented a plan for a UK-inspired child sex offender register, designed to let parents verify if individuals interacting with their children have a history of offenses against minors.

“This register is an idea whose time has come – and it is now time to put it into force to protect our kids,” Dutton said in a statement.

However, a Redbridge and Accent Research poll of 20 marginal seats released on Saturday showed Labor had reached a 54.5-45.5 two-party lead.

This marks an increase of 2 percentage points from the previous poll conducted less than a week prior, and signifies a 3.5 percentage point shift since the last election within those constituencies.

Asked about Labor’s lead in the polls, Albanese said there was no complacency in his party.

“We certainly take nothing for granted,” he stated from the highly contested seat of Gilmore, located on the NSW South Coast, which Labor narrowly secured by only 373 votes or 0.02 percent in 2022.

“The truth is that no prime minister has been re-elected after serving a full term since John Howard in 2004.

“We have a mountain to climb. We are a couple of steps up that mountain, but there’s a long way to go.”

The two leaders will face off in the third debate of the campaign tomorrow night, The Great Debate – live and exclusive on Channel 9, 9Now and Stan at 7.30pm AEST.
