Congo ebola

In an effort to contain a swiftly escalating Ebola outbreak, authorities in northeastern Congo have prohibited funeral wakes and limited gatherings to no more than 50 people. The decision comes as medical personnel face challenges due to resource shortages and resistance from local communities.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has upgraded the outbreak risk level for Congo to “very high,” a step up from the previous “high” classification. Despite this, the organization maintains that the likelihood of the virus spreading internationally remains low.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus reported that there are 82 confirmed cases and seven deaths linked to the outbreak, although the true scale is thought to be “much larger.”

The International Rescue Committee revealed that financial constraints forced them to halt surveillance operations in three out of five zones in Ituri over the past year, highlighting the impact of funding cuts on the response effort.

Efforts to manage the crisis are further complicated by ongoing armed conflict in the area. Aid organizations must navigate potential threats from armed groups when traveling from Bunia to Mongbwalu.

Gabriela Arenas of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “The outbreak can still be contained, but the window for action is narrow.”
